The Hungarian Academy of Sciences (HAS) was founded 200 years ago by István Széchenyi, who offered his annual income to support the development of science in Hungary. Today, the Academy has 365 members representing all major branches of science. The HAS plays a central role in Hungarian scientific life. It supports research, maintains a network of research institutes, evaluates scientific performance, and advises the government on complex societal and technological issues. Its importance lies in preserving scientific standards, promoting independent research, and ensuring that decision-making can rely on well-founded, evidence-based knowledge.
